Tips on Internet Security
All our Internet transactions are
done securely through PayPal, an eBay company.
Due to the fact that new Internet
threats are constantly being created, we highly recommend the
following:
- Install a virus
program with the latest virus definitions and update them weekly.
- Microsoft
service packs must be installed regularly. We can help you set up
your system to notify you and download these updates automatically.
Some take over an hour to download by phone modem, so if you use a dialup
connection, we recommend starting them late at night or other times when
your phone is not used.
- Do not open
suspicious email, even from known parties as this is the primary way that
viruses are spread. Once on your PC, the virus will use the email
addresses on your computer to send itself and make it appear the email is
from you, (or someone else).
- If you have a
permanent high speed connection or are on the Internet many hours at a
time, install a firewall. This can be part of your router setup for
Internet connection sharing or software on your PC. It is built into
Windows XP and newer.
- Do not give out
your email address to strangers. You'll often be asked for an email
address when you enter contests or obtain free content from the Internet. Setup a "junk" email account
for this purpose. Gmail, Yahoo, MSN and many others will give you a
free account, plus they and others have virus scanning built in.
- If you have
additional questions, first open the start menu on your Windows desktop,
click on help then type in a word or two about the subject you need help
on. The second place I look is on the internet at WWW.SUPPORT.MICROSOFT.COM OR WWW.GOOGLE.COM. They may give you
too many "hits", but you can narrow down your search by adding
words to your search.
